Opera performances at The Barcelona’s Teatro Nuevo (1844-1846)

In the context of the theatrical outbreak in Barcelona since 1837 and after the liberal revolutions, several entertainment centers opened their doors, taking advantage of the empty spaces of former convents and monasteries abandoned within the walls of the city. Beyond the new Gran Teatre del Liceu and the life of the Teatro de Santa Cruz (or Principal), one of the few theaters with operatic activity was the Teatro Nuevo, whose life, although short, was significant and appreciated by the public and critics. This article reviews the two lyrical seasons of the Teatro Nuevo, in a period in which the Liceu was in the phase of moving to La Rambla and faced with competition with the Teatro Principal.
