Abstract

The composer, critical and folklorist Manuel Manrique de Lara (1863-1929) is an unknown person on Spanish Musicology. Till this moment, and monograph had been known, and there are still many aspects of his intense life hidden in some archives. In any case, his importance in our history is notable. Defender of wagnerist tendency, he was one of the introductors of Richard Strauss' work in Spain, throught his criticisms in many newspapers of Madrid. He was the only pupil of Ruperto Chapí, and his creative work was played by all the contemporary orchestras and estimated by most of the criticáis. His investigation of folklore with Spanish tradition, under Menéndez Pidal's guidance, was essential for Sephardic collection of ballads (called Romancero Sefardí)- In this work we show the most significative contribution of Manrique de Lara, signing especially his work as a critical, where the world of music in Madrid at the beninnig of this century is perfectly reflected.
