Abstract

Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599), chapel master and polyphonist, represents a real glory for Spain, being the most hispanic-tempered composer, and the only of the 16th. Century that, remaining at the Iberian peninsula for his whole life, could see his works printed all around Spain, France, Italy and Flanders. The survival, moreover, of his works on manuscript sources (in many Spanish, and from the New World, collégial churches and Cathedrals), of common use in the Catholic liturgy till the end of the 18th. Century, makes him worthy of the edition -at the same level than Morales or Victoria- of his "Opera Omnia". In this paper, it is introduced' the artistic personality of the "maestro", through a selective specimen of his wide musical production in latin and Spanish languages, compiled in the described Series, to which will be needed to refer, in order to learn about the composer, as well as for having knowledge about the performance practice and the spreading of his music, via the many "media" performing Renaissance polyphony.
