Ludwig van Beethoven composed two versions of Goethe's poem „Neue Liebe, neues Leben" in 1798/99 and 1810 respectively. A comparison of both versions reveals a change in the composer's intention. At first in several passages he followed the more traditional technique of transferring single words of the text directly into musical figures. Later on he seemed more intent on expressing the general mood and eliminated some of the rather simplistic details in favour of a more subjective rendering of the poems content.
